Polish tennis player could no longer remain silent. Brutal truth. "Fake company"
– Everyone seems to wish you well, say: "good job", "congrats" – these are the classic lines, but in reality everyone is just waiting for you to slip up . Before, I lived with this false hope that I had friends there, that I could find friendship and that it was great company. However, my injury verified this very quickly – says the 32-year-old former tennis player in an interview with Dawid Celt and Marek Furjan, creators of the Breakpoint channel.
– No one has said anything? – asks podcast host Marek Furjan.
– No. It stung me a little, but it opened my eyes to what it really looks like.
"This is a total scandal. I have to blame the parents and coaches"Paula Kania-Choduń was 128th in the WTA ranking in 2015. Three years earlier, she had won the doubles tournament in Tashkent. She had won gold medals in the singles and team Polish championships. This is a list of her greatest achievements. Her promising career was halted by the aforementioned injury. – I completely smashed my shoulder. One doctor told me: "if you took a cutlet and smashed it completely, it would look like your shoulder," she says.
In his conversation with Celt and Furjan, he focuses primarily on the toxicity of the Polish tennis community. Although he, along with Sandra Zaniewska and Magda Linnette, are from the very strong 1992 class, there was never really any cooperation between them, and it was mostly jealousy.
- It was bad. And now I look back at how much untapped potential there was in our little cauldron. Sandra and I were in the same club and never trained together. It's a scandal. How can you have such good players - the best in the club, the best in the region even - and you don't train with her.
Here I have to blame our parents and coaches, because as a young player you don't know what's good for you yet. I was afraid to play sparring. Jesus, what happens if I lose to her? Something like that can't happen. Who can make you play better? People like that - Paula Kania on the Breakpoint podcast
– In fact, it was only now, a year ago, that I started to wish Madzia Linette well. Honestly. And I was happy with her results. Now, when she beat Coco Gauff in Miami, I shed tears of joy, because I knew how much it cost her. But look how much time had to pass for me to grow into it. Because even as an adult player, this jealousy was there. And maybe it would have continued if I had played – says Paula Kania-Choduń.
After finishing her career, Paula took up business and commentating on matches on TV. Together with her husband Paweł Choduń , they run an event hall in Dąbrowa Górnicza. You can also listen to her during tennis broadcasts on Canal+, Polsat Sport and TVP. Among fans, she has a reputation for asking even Iga Świątek uncomfortable questions.
- This is our job. If someone plays badly, you can't "sweeten off", you have to say it objectively. You say that they simply played badly. Only with respect. Because I know how I would like to be talked about, I won't comment in a bad light. Because I know that behind what is happening currently, there is often a long history. I don't know, your grandfather died, some tragedy in the family. And you have to respect that - he emphasizes in an interview with Celt and Furjan
I really like it [the work of a TV expert – editor’s note]. And that’s the plus of this sad tennis. Because if I hadn’t experienced all that, maybe I wouldn’t be able to tell it in an interesting way – Paula Kania-Choduń.
– There was a moment, after the tournament in Warsaw. I was coming down after the commentary, we did well. Sunny, smiling. I looked, and there were Polish players, all in tears. And then I thought to myself: wow, I'm so glad I'm not there anymore – says Kania-Choduń.
